Dundee United are top of the Scottish Championship at Christmas after beating St Mirren 2-1, while Hibernian were held to a draw by Raith Rovers.

United's 13-game unbeaten run looked in jeopardy when John Sutton capitalised upon a miscued clearance in the box to give St Mirren a 27th-minute lead.

But the Tangerines were back on level terms a minute later when Scott Fraser smashed home an equaliser.

And Fraser was involved in Dundee United's winner, floating a 45th-minute free-kick into the box for Simon Murray to head past St Mirren goalkeeper Scott Gallacher.

Hibernian, who began the day at the top of the table, left it late to rescue a point at home to Raith Rovers.

Jean-Yves M'Voto gave Rovers the lead with a header early in the second half but substitute Martin Boyle drilled home an equaliser two minutes from time to earn Hibs a point.

Dumbarton snatched a point in a thrilling 4-4 draw at Ayr United after a late headed equaliser from Ryan Stevenson.

Scott McKenna and Gary Harkin put the home side two up before Robert Thomson pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time. Daniel Harvie made it 2-2 seven minutes after the restart before Ayr regained the lead through Alan Forrest's penalty followed Andy Stirling's red card for a foul on Paul Cairney.

The 10 men of Dumbarton levelled things up again through Joseph Thomson and looked to be heading towards defeat when Cairney made it 4-3 in the 85th minute. But Stevenson had the last word with a header two minutes from time to earn Dumbarton a share of the points.

And Morton maintained their unbeaten home record in the Scottish Championship with a 1-0 victory over Queen of the South.

Thomas Ware scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute, taking Morton up to third in the table.
