Wayne Rooney is expected to be fit for Manchester United's clash with Arsenal on Saturday live on Sky Sports 1 HD, according to Sky sources.

The 31-year-old forward withdrew from the England squad hours ahead of their 2-2 draw with Spain at Wembley on Tuesday due to a knee problem.

It is understood Rooney attempted to train on Sunday with the national team, but left the pitch citing discomfort in his knee.

He subsequently went for a scan at the Aspire medical facility in Watford on Monday where a slight knee injury was discovered.

Rooney reported to United's training ground on Tuesday, having been released by the FA, and he was assessed by medical staff at Carrington.

The Sun newspaper alleged the England captain appeared to have been drinking heavily on Saturday night after dropping in on a wedding party.

A spokesman for Rooney has defended the player's actions to Sky Sports News HQ, insisting the Liverpudlian was enjoying a night off along with the rest of the squad and did not break any FA disciplinary rules.

He said: "Wayne, along with the rest of the England squad, was on a night off duty. Rather than going out, he chose to stay at the team hotel to relax and celebrate a fine England victory against Scotland.

"During the course of the evening he was approached by numerous fellow guests for autographs and pictures. As he has always been, Wayne was happy to sign, pose for photos and chat with guests. It is sad that one or two of them have now sought to turn Wayne's friendly good nature to their advantage."

Rooney has struggled to establish himself in Jose Mourinho's United team this season but lately has seen an upturn in form, starting in the victory at Swansea and then England's win over Scotland on Friday.
