Everton were the only Premier League academy side to claim victory in 90 minutes in the revamped Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night as their U23s won 2-0 at Sky Bet League One leaders Bolton.

Callum Dyson and Conor McAleny got the goals for the Toffees at the Macron Stadium as David Unsworth's youngsters took the three points despite being able to only name four substitutes.

Norwich's academy side claimed a crushing 6-1 victory on the road at Peterborough with Anthony Andreu netting a hat-trick and Josh Murphy scoring a couple of goals.

Reading's youngsters were the only other academy outfit to win without the need for a penalty shoot-out - this competition sees drawn matches go to penalties with the winner getting an extra point - as Joseph Mendes' penalty secured a 3-2 victory at Bristol Rovers.

Marcin Wasilewski, Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray were three of the players in the Leicester academy line-up against Sheffield United and the Foxes enjoyed a 5-4 penalty shoot-out success after the match ended 0-0 at Bramall Lane.

Southampton went to penalties after a 0-0 draw against Charlton at The Valley but Saints lost 5-4 on spot-kicks to the Addicks.

The other Premier League academy sides all lost in normal time.

Swansea were beaten 3-0 by AFC Wimbledon, Stoke lost 1-0 to Bradford despite having Marc Muniesa and Charlie Adam in their first XI, West Ham suffered a 4-2 defeat against Coventry, West Brom went down 2-0 at Millwall and Middlesbrough slipped to a 2-1 loss in their clash with Scunthorpe.

The academy sides from Sky Bet Championship quartet Blackburn, Brighton, Derby and Wolves lost on the road at Fleetwood, Southend, Port Vale and Chesterfield respectively.

The other matches were all played between clubs from Sky Bet League One and League Two.

Exeter manager Paul Tisdale named himself on the bench but didn't make the decision to come on during the 4-2 defeat at Oxford and Oldham was the place to go for goals as the Latics lost 5-4 at home to Carlisle.

Walsall and Yeovil also picked up victories in high-scoring games as they beat Grimsby 5-2 and Portsmouth 4-3 respectively.

Bury beat Morecambe 4-1 and Plymouth won by the same scoreline against Newport.

There was a 3-0 win for Crewe over Accrington and Wycombe also enjoyed that outcome at Northampton.

There were further wins for League Two sides against League One opposition as Luton won 2-1 at Gillingham and the EFL's bottom club Cambridge beat Shrewsbury 1-0.

In all-League Two games, Blackpool beat Cheltenham 2-1, Crawley claimed a narrow 1-0 success at home to Colchester, Leyton Orient defeated Stevenage 3-1, Doncaster won 2-0 against Mansfield.

MK Dons needed penalties to get the better of Barnet as they won 5-3 on spot-kicks following a 2-2 draw.
