Jurgen Klopp claims that Liverpool did excellent transfer business this summer despite failing to sign a left-back.

We made Liverpool losers in our transfer window verdict because they face at least half a season with James Milner and Alberto Moreno as their left-back options.

They somehow made a profit on their transfer dealings as they sold a whole raft of unwanted players, with Christian Benteke (£27m), Jordon Ibe (£15m), Joe Allen (£13m) and Martin Skrtel (£5.5m) contributing to sales of around £70m. They spent around £68m, with the bulk of the money going to Southampton and Newcastle for Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Asked about the transfer profit, Klopp said: “Nobody has congratulated me! To be honest, I’m not interested in expectations and opinions from outside.

“We did our job and we all think we did it really good. Now we have to prove it.”

Liverpool have shed 13 players who appeared in last season’s Premier League, either permanently or on loan, bit Klopp says that kind of exodus should never happen again.

“The thing is it was really busy and it should not be that busy.

“Our squad was not too small, not too big, but we found a few really good young players in this pre-season where it was like ‘wow’. It’s maybe a little bit too early for them, but not much too early. They are close.

“I had to make hard decisions because we had too many players. If we couldn’t sell them then we did loans because that’s how it was. Otherwise we’d be standing here talking about thirty-something players. You have to make decisions.

“If you sell a player and he really performs for the next club you just say: ‘sorry, we didn’t see it or whatever’. You have to be ready for that.

“But a busy transfer window like that shouldn’t happen too often. And it will not happen. But we all agreed on this. I’ve been here 11 months now and this is what we needed to do in the summer.”
