Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford “can be an amazing complement for each other”, according to Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese was unveiled as United’s new manager on Tuesday, and wasted no time in exerting his dominance at Old Trafford.

Many expect Mourinho to deliver instant results at the club, considering the 53-year-old has won seven league titles in four different countries throughout a successful managerial career.

But many feel that he is unsuitable for the role, and does not match United’s proud traditions, particularly with regards to using younger players.

Mourinho defended his record of promoting youth on Tuesday – or at least he attempted to, producing a list of the 55 ‘young’ stars he has used at each of his clubs, a list which included Arjen Robben, then a seasoned 20-year-old international, at Chelsea.

Marcus Rashford emerged as the latest youth product at the club last season, and Mourinho has allayed fears that the striker will not be handed similar opportunities during his reign.

Mourinho stated that Rashford, 18, and free-agent signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 34, can work together, telling MUTV: “Let me start with one point. 34 is Zlatan’s age and 18 is Marcus Rashford’s age. 34 plus 18 divided by two is the perfect age for a football player.

“So our two strikers, they are exactly in the perfect age because 18 is not the perfect age and 34 is not. So I think they can be an amazing complement for each other with their qualities.”
