There was controversy at Elland road as Leeds opened the scoring with a quickly taken free kick which took the Bristol City players by surprise

Leeds United striker Chris Wood scored his 19th goal of the season against Bristol City at Elland Road on Tuesday night, but should his effort have stood?

Garry Monk's side opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark after some quick thinking from Pablo Hernandez, whose quickly taken free kick caught out the visitors' back line.

Wood was there in the right place at the right time to sweep home the Spain midfielder's pass from 10 yards out.

However, the Robins players were furious with referee Jeremy Simpson for allowing the goal to stand, arguing that Wood had fouled captain Bailey Wright seconds before scoring.

The official allowed Wood's strike to stand, though, and Leeds went on to record a vital 2-1 win that keeps them fifth in the Championship table.
