Diego Maradona says he is delighted to become a FIFA ambassador under president Gianni Infantino.
The 56-year-old had been a harsh critic of FIFA's previous president Sepp Blatter who was forced to vacate the position in 2015.
Maradona, who won 91 caps with Argentina and skippered them to World Cup glory in 1986, said: "Finally, I can fulfil one of the lifelong dreams, to work for a clean and transparent FIFA alongside people who really love football."
Ex-chief Blatter, who was replaced by Infantino in February 2016, is serving a six-year ban for ethics violations.
Maradona, who was the greatest player of his generation, enjoyed a club career with Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona.
The world body is recovering from the worst scandal in its history, with dozens of people, including ex-FIFA executive committee members, indicted in the United States since May 2015.
