Martin's Starting Stats
On Sunday I was at the FA Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Man City for the world coverage - but I want to reflect on something that happened on the same date 85 years ago.
Before Sunday, Man City had won eight consecutive appearances in the FA Cup semi-final going back to their last defeat in 1932 at Villa Park where they lost 1-0 to Arsenal through a Cliff Bastin goal.
In the final that year - which was played on April 23 at the old Wembley - Arsenal went 1-0 up through Bob John. Newcastle attacked and the ball was run out behind the byline by Jimmy Richardson for a clear goal kick but the flag wasn't raised. The Arsenal defenders stopped, Richardson crossed and Jack Allen tapped it in - the goal was given to everyone's surprise and they went on to win the cup.
So Arsenal were very hard done by in the 1932 final - but on Sunday they were the beneficiaries of a similar situation when the ball was deemed to have gone out, but hadn't, from Leroy Sane's cross for Sergio Aguero to 'score'. Maybe 85 years to the very day, there was some payback for Arsenal!
Sam ends Anfield jinx
Sam Allardyce won at Anfield on his 14th attempt. Does any manager have a worse record at an opposition ground? (Tim, London)
MARTIN SAYS: It was 14th time lucky for Allardyce, as Palace won 2-1 at Anfield on Super Sunday. He had not won a league game there in 13 attempts with various clubs.
With regards to your question, Harry Redknapp stands alone, having never beaten Manchester United in 15 league games at Old Trafford.
The new Birmingham City boss also failed to beat Liverpool at Anfield on 13 straight occasions, while the run stretched to 12 times at Arsenal - he was finally victorious at both in the 2010-11 season with Tottenham.
Then there is David Moyes, who has a hat-trick of sides whom he has failed to beat for 13 consecutive matches. Liverpool are one such club having lost with Sunderland in November, while the run against Arsenal and Chelsea could extend to 14 should they fail to beat the duo in their final two games of the season this May.
And then there's Moyes' record - as an away manager - at Manchester United. The Scot is now 12 games without a win at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Allardyce's 13-game run at Liverpool may be at an end, but he still has a similarly unwanted record at Arsenal - a winless streak of 13 having most recently lost 2-0 at the Emirates on New Year's Day.
Benteke haunts Reds
Has any player scored more goals as an away player at Anfield than Christian Benteke? (Peter, Wrexham)
MARTIN SAYS: Benteke has now scored more Premier League goals at Anfield than he ever did while playing for the club in the 2015-16 season - five in total for Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.
In terms of goals at Anfield, his five Premier League strikes at Liverpool is matched by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Andrey Arshavin - the latter of course famously struck four in one match in Arsenal's 4-4 draw there back in 2009.
But there is one player who has is head and shoulders above the rest, and would have been an unwelcome sight when arriving with Manchester United in the late 90s - and that is Andrew Cole.
The former England striker scored eight times at Anfield in total, four times for United having already scored there for Newcastle.
Cole carried on his fine form at Liverpool when featuring for Blackburn, scoring twice - while he also netted once for Fulham in a 3-1 loss back in 2005.
Shots fired
How many shots did Manchester United have against Burnley in their two Premier League games this season? Surely it's some kind of record? (Dave, Nottingham)
MARTIN SAYS: Much was made of the 37 shots Manchester United had against Burnley in their 0-0 draw at Old Trafford earlier this season, as Tom Heaton proved to be an immovable object in goal for Sean Dyche's side.
However, Heaton and Burnley succumbed 2-0 to United on Sunday, but just the 13 shots at Turf Moor means it was 50 shots in total across the two games.
That is four shy of this season's record. Southampton had 54 shots in their two games against Burnley, winning 3-1 at home in October but falling to a 1-0 defeat in January.
That record is shared by Liverpool, who had 54 attempts against Hull - emphatically winning 5-1 at Anfield in September, but losing 2-0 at the KCOM in February.
However, this tally is eight shots shy of the overall Premier League record of 62 shots across two matches which has been achieved three times, according to our friends at Opta.
Most shots across two Premier League games in one season
Team | Opposition | Shots (inc. blocked) | Season |
---|---|---|---|
Manchester City | QPR | 62 | 2011/12 |
Chelsea | Stoke | 62 | 2008/09 |
Chelsea | Stoke | 62 | 2009/10 |
Tottenham | Aston Villa | 59 | 2009/10 |
Chelsea | West Ham | 59 | 2013/14 |
Chelsea | Birmingham | 59 | 2009/10 |
Manchester City recorded 62 attempts against QPR in the 2011-12 season. City won 3-2 at QPR in November before memorably repeating that feat at the Etihad on the final day of the season, as they won the title in injury-time.
Interestingly, Chelsea had 62 shots against Stoke across two league games in two straight seasons, back in 2008-09 and 2009-10. The Blues prevailed in all four of those matches, which included a 7-0 win at Stamford Bridge in April 2010.
Joy on the road
Crystal Palace have won three PL games in a row at Anfield. Has anyone else done this to one of the big clubs? (Ali, Bristol)
MARTIN SAYS: Of the six ever-present teams - Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Man Utd and Spurs - only Arsenal can boast the fact that they've never lost three home games in a row to one team.
Manchester City enjoyed three straight wins at Old Trafford - making them the only club to beat United away on three or more occasions, while surprisingly, only Blackburn have done likewise to Chelsea.
The list is somewhat longer for Liverpool, having lost three straight matches at home to Chelsea, Leicester and Man Utd - and now Crystal Palace- during the Premier League era.
Another ever-present side, Spurs, actually lost six matches at White Hart Lane to Manchester United between 2001 and 2007, while Chelsea have enjoyed three straight wins at their London rivals on two separate occasions.
Coventry, Everton, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest have also won three consecutive matches away at Tottenham.
Everton themselves lost four straight games at Goodison Park against city rivals Liverpool between 2001 and 2003, while Man Utd have matched that feat on two occasions.
United and Liverpool have also beaten Everton three times in a row away from home, and the other three ever-presents (Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham) also join them on that number.
10 v 11? No problem...
Hull beat Watford 2-0 despite having Oumar Niasse sent off after 25 minutes on Saturday - has a team ever won by two goals despite going down to 10 men so early on? (Tom, Oxford)
MARTIN SAYS: It was a remarkable achievement from Hull to boost the survival hopes with 10 men for the majority of the game.
A total of 13 teams have actually managed to win by a two-goal advantage having had a man sent off before the 30-minute mark, but on six of those occasions, the opposition also had at least one player shown red.
Occasions where team with man sent off in first 30 mins beat team with 11 men by two goals
Date | Minute of red card | TEAM v opposition | Score |
---|---|---|---|
March 2014 | 10 | MAN CITY v Hull | 2-0 |
May 1997 | 12 | ARSENAL v Derby | 3-1 |
January 2007 | 13 | ARSENAL v Blackburn | 2-0 |
April 2006 | 16 | CHELSEA v West Ham | 4-1 |
December 1995 | 17 | EVERTON v Leeds | 2-0* |
January 2012 | 23 | BLACKBURN v Fulham | 3-1 |
August 2002 | 26 | MAN CITY v Everton | 3-1* |
And that leaves you with seven games where a team has played 10 v 11 for more than an hour and gone on to win by two goals or more.
Honourable mention must go to Man City, who beat Hull 2-0 in 2014 despite losing Vincent Kompany after 10 minutes. So the last time this happened was on the same ground three years ago.
Also Chelsea ran out 4-1 victors over West Ham in 2006 having been a goal down and losing Maniche to an early red, while Arsenal beat Derby 3-1 in 1997 despite being a man down and a goal down.
*These two teams were winning when the player was sent off early.
