UEFA have confirmed that John Stones’ inclusion in Manchester City’s Champions League squad was not a mistake.
Confusion reigned on Tuesday morning after the governing body named City target Stones among the club’s squad for the upcoming Champions League play-offs.
Pep Guardiola has made no secret of his desire to sign the 22-year-old this summer, with Everton thought to be demanding at least £50m for his signature.
But the club have made no official announcement of the deal, leaving many to question whether UEFA’s publishing of Stones within the City squad was a mistake.
However, a UEFA spokesperson has confirmed that the 21-man list published on their official website was the complete list that they received from the club.
‘He was in the squad list we received from Manchester City,’ read a statement on their website. ‘The deadline was yesterday and the player was in the squad.
‘He has been registered to play [for City]. We are double-checking now as we have had a lot calls about this.’
