New York City edged out LA Galaxy 1-0 as former England team mates Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard went head-to-head in the United States.

David Villa scored after just six minutes at the Yankee Stadium to give Patrick Viera's side a slender victory over their Western Conference rivals.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole lined up alongside former Liverpool captain Gerrard for the Galaxy but was unable to avert the defeat.

Nigel de Jong, Giovani Dos Santos and Robbie Keane completed the list of other ex-Premier League stars who played.

Lampard and Gerrard were up against each other for the first time since the pair moved across the Atlantic and joined NYC and the Galaxy respectively.

After a slow start in the Big Apple, Chelsea's record goalscorer has scored 13 goals in 23 games. He was substituted in the 83rd minute.

Gerrard was at the heart of most of Galaxy's attempts at goal but in the end there was nothing he could do to cancel out Villa's early strike.

New York are one point clear at the top of the Eastern Conference ahead of Toronto who defeated Philadelphia Union 3-1. Galaxy are fifth in the Western Conference seven points behind FC Dallas.
