Guardiola: City won’t deserve CL if they mess up

Pep Guardiola says that Manchester City will only have themselves to blame should they miss out on the Champions League this season.

City drew 2-2 at Middlesbrough on Sunday, but now face three consecutive home games. Should they win all three, City will surely have secured a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Guardiola is predicting a tight finish in the race for the top four, but believes that City will not deserve to qualify for the Champions League if they fail to win those three games. Three victories may also be enough to finish third, which would ensure automatic group stage entry.

“It will be tight until the last game in London against Watford,” Guardiola said.

“We have three games at home now. All the games are tough. We knew that, we could not forget about the position of Middlesbrough.

“They are fighting to survive to stay in the Premier League and these are the most difficult teams to face.

“Now we have three games at home – Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Brom – and those games will decide whether we deserve to be in the Champions League next season or not.”
